Ekiti NSE Chairman, Engr. Alawode Urges Action on Climate Resilience as World Environment Day 2026 is Marked

The Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ekiti State Chapter, Engr. Kemi Alawode has called for stronger investment in climate-resilient infrastructure as engineers join the global community to mark World Environment Day 2026.

Addressing newsmen in Ado Ekiti, the NSE Ekiti Chairman said engineers have a critical role in translating environmental policy into practical solutions that protect lives and livelihoods, saying Sustainable development cannot happen without sound engineering.

Engr. Alawode identified flooding, erosion, and poor waste management as key environmental challenges facing communities.

According to her, poorly planned drainage, deforestation, and indiscriminate dumping of refuse continue to worsen the impact of heavy rains on roads and homes.

The NSE chairman urged government at all levels to prioritize green infrastructure in urban planning.

This includes wider drainage channels, retention basins, and the use of permeable materials in road construction to reduce runoff and flooding in Ado-Ekiti and other towns.

She also highlighted the need to integrate renewable energy into public projects. Solar-powered street lighting, energy-efficient public buildings, and support for off-grid solutions in rural areas, he said, can cut emissions while lowering costs.

On waste management, the NSE Ekiti Chairman called for improved collaboration between engineers, environmental agencies, and local governments and advocated for engineered landfills, recycling facilities, and public education on waste segregation to reduce environmental pollution.

The chairman commended ongoing afforestation efforts in Ekiti but stressed that tree planting must be paired with soil conservation and water management techniques.

Engr. Alawode charged young engineers in the state to embrace environmental engineering as a career path.

With climate adaptation becoming central to development, she said, there would be growing demand for expertise in water resources, renewable energy, and sustainable construction.

She said Ekiti NSE would support capacity-building programs and partner with schools and community groups to promote environmental awareness.
