Senate Summons Security Chiefs Over Killings of Ekiti Monarchs, Others

Following the killings of two Ekiti State traditional rulers, on Monday, by suspected kidnappers, the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly, has summoned the Security Chiefs to an emergency session.

The two royal fathers, the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba David Babatunde Ogunsakin and the Olumojo of Imojo-Ekiti, Oba Samuel Olatunde Olusola, were brutally murdered by the marauders along Oke Ako-Irele road; while the Alara of Ara (Ikole),Oba Sunday Adebayo Fatoba, escaped the murderous attack narrowly.

The summon was issued following a motion moved by the Senate Leader and Senator representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and was seconded by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro.

The reason for the action also included the explosion that rocked Ibadan recently, the capital of Oyo State, leading to deaths and destruction of property, as well as gruesome murder of innocent citizens at Mangu, Bokkos and Barkin Ladin areas of Plateau State.

Senator Bamidele, while moving the motion on the floor of the Senate, on Tuesday, said the emergency meeting will be a veritable opportunity to brainstorm on how to reduce the frightening spate of killings and kidnappings across the country.

The Senate Leader, also moved a motion on the need for the Senate to observe a minute silence for the departed souls.

Senator Bamidele said it was gruesome for traditional rulers to have been mowed down by marauders under any guise, describing this as a clear desecration of the traditional institution.

Adopting the motion, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, said the session would form a platform for indepth discussion and cross fertilisation of ideas on how to rejig and fortify the country’s security architectures.

Akpabio appealed to Nigerians to take the current situation with equanimity, assuring that the Senate shall partner the executive and security Chiefs to rid the nation of blood sucking criminals.
