The Ekiti State Police Command has warned political parties and their supporters against the destruction and defacing of campaign posters and billboards ahead of the June 20, 2026 governorship election.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, the Command said it had observed with dismay the activities of persons suspected to be political party loyalists who go about destroying and defacing posters and billboards of rival parties across the state.
The Command described the act as a violation of the Electoral Act and a crime against the freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “This is morally unjustifiable, as well,” the statement added.
The police warned that any individual or group found engaging in the act or any conduct capable of undermining peace in the state would be “severely dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the law.”
Politicians were advised to play by the rules and caution their supporters to avoid “dire consequences.” The Command also urged parents and guardians to warn their children and wards against being used as “tools in the hands of some mischievous politicians who are hell bent on jeopardizing the goal of a peaceful, free and credible election.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, appealed to citizens to be law-abiding, vigilant, and promptly report to the police any person or group engaging in acts that could cause unnecessary apprehension in the state.
