NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES
It was William Shakespeare who wrote in his play Julius Caesar: “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.”
In simple terms, this means that the harmful consequences of a person’s actions often endure, while their good deeds are quickly forgotten. As humans, we are naturally inclined to dwell on the wrongs people have done, overlooking the many times they have done right.
On this note, I beg to differ.
I choose to remember the good people do—whether toward me, toward others, or toward a cause. Over the course of my life, I have been impacted in unforgettable ways by individuals who may have considered their actions ordinary, but to me, they were life-changing investments that shaped who I am today.
Nine years ago, in the early hours of a morning, my mother received a call from Mr Ayo Owoeye. He asked if she had a child preparing for the UTME. She responded that she did—me. I was then directed to fill in my details, and the rest, as they say, became history.
At the time, I had written the exam twice without securing admission—not because I failed, but because it simply wasn’t the right time. This time, however, it was.
My 2017 UTME form was fully paid for, and I wrote the exam at no cost. I was not alone; I, alongside 1,049 others, benefited from this opportunity. In the end, I scored 291 out of 400, and the following year, I began my undergraduate journey at Obafemi Awolowo University, studying Chemical Engineering.
During my time at Great Ife, I went beyond academics. I invested my time, effort, and resources into leadership and personal development. I served in several capacities, including:
-Vice President, Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE), OAU Chapter (2021/2022)
-Sports Director, Federation of Ekiti State Students Union (FESSU), OAU Chapter (2021)
-National President, Federation of Iyin Ekiti Students Union (FIESU) (2021)
-Member, Great Ife Students’ Union Judicial Council (2022/2023)
-Deputy Secretary, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ekiti State Chapter
I also contested for the position of National President of FESSU National Government but lost by a narrow margin of five votes. Undeterred, I returned to serve as the Electoral Chairman of the same body in the 2023/2024.
I completed my undergraduate studies in July 2024 and formally graduated in December 2025 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Today, I bear the title Engineer Balogun Sunday Olusegun Kelvin, GMNSE, GMNSChE, B.Sc.—a journey made possible because one man believed in me and 1,049 others.
He could have spent his money on personal advancement, property, or luxury. Instead, he chose to invest in the future of young people.
That man is Honourable (Congressman) Bimbo Daramola
While this is my story, imagine the stories of the 1,049 others who benefited from that program. Notably, the initiative expanded even further in 2018, giving countless UTME candidates another opportunity. I even had the privilege of addressing beneficiaries during the second edition of the program (video included in this post).
I am aware of the rumors and speculations that may exist. However, whether or not they are true is of little importance to me, for the Bible says, “He that is faithful in little is faithful in much.”
Hon. Bimbo Daramola served as a Member of the House of Representatives for Ekiti North Federal Constituency I from 2011 to 2015. Two years after leaving office, he sponsored 1,050 UTME candidates across Ekiti State—beyond his constituency. I know this because I was one of them, and I am not from his constituency.
While some questioned his motives, he repeated the gesture once again. And if such a man chooses to serve again, I find it difficult to think of someone more deserving.
For those who may question the intent behind this write-up, I urge you to look beyond assumptions and consider the facts. If you still find no reason to support him, then know this—I am living proof of his investment in the future.
With gratitude,
Balogun Sunday Olusegun (Kelvin_X)
GMNSE, GMNSChE.
