It was a moment of mixed emotions on the streets of Ado-Ekiti as members of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Ekiti State Chapter, held a solemn road walk to mark the 10th anniversary of six medical doctors who died in a ghastly accident while traveling to Northern Nigeria for a national assessment.
The tragedy, which occurred a decade ago, claimed the lives of the doctors in their prime and sent shockwaves through the medical community nationwide.
Though their deaths left deep pain in the hearts of their families, colleagues, and the NMA, participants at the walk said the doctors died as legends whose legacy of service and sacrifice endures.
Beyond the walk, the NMA, in collaboration with the Dr. Tunde Aladesanmi Foundation and the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, will hold a road safety workshop on Saturday.
The workshop aims to raise awareness on safe driving and reduce avoidable deaths on Nigerian roads.
Speaking with journalists, NMA Ekiti Chairman, Dr. Ifedayo Oreyemi, said the doctors would forever be remembered for their sacrifices to the profession and humanity. “Ten years on, the wound is still fresh. But we are proud they lived for something greater than themselves,” he said.
Survivors of the crash and other colleagues paid glowing tributes to the deceased, describing them as dedicated, selfless, and passionate about healthcare delivery. “Their memories live on in every life we save,” one doctor said.
Some wives of the late doctors, who joined the walk, described the last decade as tough but thanked the NMA for its consistent support. “The journey as widows has not been easy, but the NMA has stood by us. That means everything,” one of them said, fighting back tears.
