In commemoration of the World Environment Day, Ekiti State Coordinator, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, Mrs Toroni Abosede has alerted residents on the dangers of environmental degradation.

She made this known today while delivering her speech on the 2023 WED day in Ado-Ekiti.

She said, “As we are all aware that June 5 of every year has been set aside by the
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for advocacy and sensitization of the stakeholders and the general public on matters relating to environmental protection, conservation and recuperation of the environment.

“This day is observed awareness about the environment and the damage caused to it by human activities. It seeks to make people more aware and protective towards the environment.

“The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day and the theme chosen for theme for this year is, ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution’. This year’s theme focuses on encouraging people to give up on the usage of plastic and identify it as the source of environmental degradation and also embrace the culture of plastic recycling.

She revealed that, our planet has been congested with plastic waste and the consequence of this is massive pollution if precautionary measures are not taken into consideration.

“Our planet is drowning in plastic and the consequence of plastic waste on the planet is far-reaching: from congesting landfills and leaching into oceans to combusting into toxic smoke.”

Furthermore, she revealed that the Ekiti State Field Office of NESREA has organised the programme to sensitize stakeholders and the youths on dangers of environmental degradation.

“The Ekiti State field office of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations
Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has thus deem it fit to organize this programme to
educate stakeholders and students from selected schools across the state capital on this menace and how to mitigate it sustainably.”
