Lagos Assembly Schedules Resumption of Obasa’s Fraud Investigation

The Lagos State House of Assembly has stated that it will wait for former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa to return to the House before deciding on the course of action, which may include an investigation.

Olukayode Ogundipe, the House spokesperson, revealed this in an exclusive interview at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday. “The other accusations against him will be addressed once he is physically present,” Ogundipe stated.

There are other rumors that we have heard about him spending varying sums of money. Although we were unsure of how they obtained the records of those, we will take action when he is seated with us”.

The spokesperson for Oshodi Constituency 1, who was asked if the Assembly would petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate the former Speaker, responded, “That will be expatiated when he is on the ground, probably a committee will be set up to look into it or probably it will also be looked at by the leadership of the House.”

“We will adhere strictly to the procedures and formalities.” When the time comes, you can be sure that the House will respond to that”.

Obasa was ousted by the lawmakers last week, among other reasons, for alleged corruption. However, in his public remarks on the subject last Saturday, Obasa denied the lawmakers’ accusation of corruption. He insisted that he was still the legitimate Speaker and claimed that his dismissal was abnormal.

During his Saturday welcome at the Speaker’s Lodge, Obasa said to his supporters, “If you want to say that I am corrupt, please prove it, let us see it.” However, in an interview on Monday, the House spokesperson insisted that Obasa’s removal was legal.

According to reports, the Assembly’s plenary meeting was not held on Monday as planned. As security was stepped up, security guards were seen on the grounds of the Assembly complex.

A majority of lawmakers ousted the former Speaker on January 13, 2025, after he was accused of financial misappropriation and misconduct. The former House deputy speaker, Mojisola Meranda, took his place.
