…as 1993/99 set of Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti marks 25th anniversary, home coming
A former Commissioner for Education Science and Technology in Ekiti State, Mr. Kehinde Ojo has called for a return to the era of corrective discipline for students in the country.
Ojo stated this on Saturday when he joined other distinguished guests to celebrate the 25th anniversary and homecoming of the 1993/99 set of Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti.
The frontline educationist opined that any rule by government, forbidding moderate use of cane and effective punishment to correct secondary school students, would lead to regrettable decadence and character flaws in the future calling on stakeholders to adopt policies that would help streamline the young generation for a successful future.
He also called on formulators of policies in the education sector to toe the path of consistency if the sector must witness stability and desirable growth.
The Chairman of the set, Mr. Anthony Babatola described the 1993/99 class as a unique and pace setting one having been coming together to make impact less than ten years after passing out of the school.
He recalled that the same set replaced old blackboards with marker boards in most of the classrooms at the boys and girls section of the school during the 20th anniversary, adding that other impacts and inputs have been made over the years
On issue of discipline and decorum, Babatola noted that the level of discipline by the school principals and teachers back then, accounted for the moulding and making of successful set members who could today come back to give back to the citadel of learning.
He stated that the discipline earlier appalled is now being applauded today by the products of such process.
In a lecture by one of the set members, Professor Idowu Omotuyi, the need to protect the heritage of the citadel of learning was underlined.
Omotuyi stated that students, government and all stakeholders have lots of work to do in maintaining structures and infrastructure in the school, most of which are considered legacy and historical projects.
He challenged government and critical stakeholders in the education sector to ensure the culture of maintenance and preservation of historic edifices is imbibed by schools.
The week-long celebration was also a time of impact and reward as the set distributed customized school bags, notepads and other items to students.
In the course of the week, set members handled some class sessions to impact knowledge in addition to a STEM practical session for students, and a comprehensive tutelage in robotics, cyber security and phishing email analysis among others.
They also presented to the school authorities an architectural model of a proposed sports complex for the school while some outstanding students spotted during the celebrations equally received cash gifts.
Former Principals and teachers including Mr. Kehinde Ojo, Mrs Florence Dada, Prince Ebenezer Adegbenro, Mrs. Folake Alade, Mrs Olonisakin and Mrs. Fagbeyiro got the outstanding tutors and mentors award from the set.
