An Environmental Expert, Mrs Ebenezer Oluwaseyi has tasked students in Ekiti State to rise up and confront the challenges posed by climate change.

She said this at a one-day sensitization and training programme organised by the Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, AGILE, at St. Louis Grammar School, Ikere-Ekiti on Wednesday.

According to her, students are expected to gain a deeper understanding of climate change and learn how they can contribute to making a positive impact.

Her words: “As climate change advocates, you are to make environmental-sensitive decisions while creating a lasting impact in your communities and society at large.

“The rate at which the climate changes for example something that is suppose to take 30-35 years, we are experiencing it even in one year and that is why we need to talk about climate change.

“The rate at which we are cutting down out trees is very alarming because tree play a very fundamental role in our lives as humans. We need to cultivate the habit of planting trees.

“Actions to combat climate change include; planting of trees, renewable energy, energy efficient cooking, correct disposal of waste products, fuel saving by sharing vehicles through car-pooling, save electricity, save water etc.”

Earlier in her opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Folake Olomojobi, represented by the Deputy Project Coordinator of AGILE, Mr. Toyin Osaleye, said the programme will be extended to other schools in the state.

“For now we are starting with some schools, later on the programme will be introduced to other schools.

“What we are doing here is called waste to wealth so that when you get back to your schools, you are the one that will train them how to make use of the waste products to generate wealth.”

Highlights of the event was the inauguration of the ECO Clubs in 10 Public Secondary Schools in Ekiti South Senatorial District and practical sessions on how to generate wealth from waste products.
