Why Wike Brought Chinda and Abe to Fubara’s Home

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, led a delegation of Rainbow Coalition leaders to the private residence of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. Joining him were the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate for the state, Kingsley Chinda, and Senator Magnus Abe.

The purpose of the meeting was not immediately clear. It was, however, the first time Wike had visited the governor since the political crisis that shook the state began, and even since the feud between the two men was resolved.

Peace had earlier returned to the state, and a reconciliation committee headed by Abe had met with Fubara twice at the Government House to discuss how the governor’s supporters could be accommodated in the new political arrangement. Fubara had also announced at a public function in Port Harcourt that he had returned to his political family.

Sources described Wike’s latest visit as strategic and part of his continuing fence-mending ahead of the Rainbow Coalition’s 2027 general election campaign. One source, who asked not to be named, said the visit was also meant to cement the renewed peace, adding that with the Abe-led committee having already engaged the governor twice, it was perhaps time for the minister to show in person that peace had truly returned.

The coalition has yet to officially begin its campaign for the poll. It was learnt that the meeting brought together Fubara’s core supporters and Rainbow Coalition leaders in the state, who reportedly agreed to collaborate and strategise on working together to win the next general elections there.
