The Afenifere Renewal Group, Ekiti State Chapter, has called on residents to vote peacefully in the June 20 governorship election as part of activities marking the 2026 commemoration of the annulled June 12, 1993 election.
In a statement signed by Coordinator Chief Bunmi Akanbi Awotiku on June 8, the group described this year’s observance as “solemn” and said it would also express solidarity with communities affected by recent bandit attacks.
It described the 1993 election as “the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history,” saying the day represented a rejection of ethnicity, religion, nepotism, and bigotry. The group blamed the annulment by the military government led by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida for reversing that progress.
The statement honoured June 12 martyrs including Pa Abraham Adesanya, Pa Alfred Rewane, and Mama Kudirat Abiola, and acknowledged the sacrifices of National Chairman Hon. Olawale Oshun, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, and current President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The group praised Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for aligning with the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria, and said it supports his efforts to make Ekiti a model state.
It urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure every vote counts and warned against thuggery and vandalism of electoral materials, saying such acts “must be discouraged.”
