Ekiti Police Commissioner Pledges to Support Ekiti Judiciary to Decongest Correctional Centre

The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Kunle Akinwale Adeniran has pledged to support the Ekiti State Judiciary to decongest the Correctional Centre in the State.

CP Adeniran made the pledge when he paid an official visit to the Ekiti State Chief Judge, Justice John Adeyeye in his office in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.

The CP also promised to work out modalities for smooth working relationship between the Rapid Response Squad and the Police Legal Unit adding that the command will ensure maximum security for Judges, Magistrates and residents of the state.

On his part, Justice Adeyeye called for collaboration between the Judiciary and the Police in ensuring security of life and property of the citizens and maintaining peace, law and order of our society.

He appreciated the CP and his entourage most sincerely for deeming it fit to meet the judiciary authority as he settles down for business as the new Commissioner of Police for Ekiti State.

Earlier, Justice Adeyeye mentioned lack of synergy between the Rapid Response Squad and the Police Legal Unit, congestion of Correctional Centre, non-availability of witnesses, security of Judges and Magistrates as part of problems facing smooth running of administration of justice in Ekiti State.

Justice Adeyeye said, some cases that ought not to be filed through remand proceedings (Form K) are sometimes filed as such, yet where many of such applications for remand are granted, it usually leads to congestion of the Correctional facility in Ekiti State which was initially meant for 324 inmates now have 846 inmates comprising of 95 federal offenders and 751 state offenders, he described the situation as unhealthy and dangerous.

The Chief Judge further said he is not unmindful of the fact that the Nigeria Police have challenges of inadequate personnel; yet, it is common knowledge that many individuals who are not necessarily exposed to serious risks of the kind, that judges have do enjoy undue Police protection.

Justice Adeyeye used the medium to applaud the Nigerian Police Force for creating the Judges’ Protection Unit made up of four policemen and attached a van to the unit, to serve as bulwark against any serious threat at the judiciary headquarters.

Present at the occasion are CSP Marcus Ogundola, (O/C RRS) ASP Ariyo Akala, (O/C LEGAL) DSP Sunday Abutu (PPRO), ASP Odewuyi Adekunle (SIB), Ekiti State Judiciary Chief Registrar, Mrs Olanike Adegoke, her deputy Mr. Adebowale Adeosun, Mr. Yomi Adeosun, Director of Finance and Mrs Feyi Olusesan, Director of Personnel, Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola among others.
