The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested and detained officers accused of extortion, intimidation and unprofessional conduct while conducting stop-and-search operations in the state.
The development followed a complaint lodged on October 6, 2026, at the Ilupeju Police Division by representatives of the Biker Association, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Chapter.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, the complainants alleged that one of their members was intercepted by a patrol team while riding alone from Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti and was allegedly asked to pay money under improper circumstances.
The Command said it immediately commenced preliminary inquiries after receiving the complaint, leading to the identification and detention of the officers involved for questioning.
The case has since been transferred to the State Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti for a discreet, comprehensive and impartial investigation to establish the facts and determine the appropriate action.
The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, has directed that the officers be subjected to appropriate disciplinary procedures in line with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force, subject to the outcome of the investigation.
The police commissioner condemned extortion, intimidation, abuse of authority and other forms of misconduct capable of undermining public confidence in the force.
He reiterated that no police officer is authorised to demand or collect money from members of the public under any guise while performing legitimate police duties.
The Command warned that officers found culpable of misconduct, abuse of office or violation of established regulations would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
It also urged members of the public to promptly report cases of unprofessional conduct involving police personnel through the appropriate channels, assuring that all credible complaints would receive necessary attention.
The statement reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, discipline and people-oriented policing, stressing that the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights and respect for the rule of law remained central to police operations in Ekiti State.
