The wife of the Chairman Okemesi/Ido-Ile LCDA, Mrs. Feyisayo Betty Ajibade has advised that the war against Gender Based Violence must start from the home.
Giving the advice while inaugurating the Gender Based Violence (Gbv) Management Committee, at Okemesi Ekiti, the LCDA Chairperson said For effective solution to the menace of Gender Based Violence, different sectors in the society must work together.
According to her, violence can include psychological, sexual and physical assault which can cause the victim to suffer many psychological problems and even cause the victim to result to violence or suicide to free herself from abuse.
She said many acts of violence against women are often carried out by criminals who perceive women to be the weaker sex, therefore easy pickings.
Mrs. Ajibade pointed out that apart from criminals’ assaults, the fact is women faced a more insidious form of violence committed daily not by total stranger but in most cases by their loved ones – husbands, brothers, uncles, cousins and even in few cases, their sons.
She said that in most places, it is a strongly held belief that men have a moral right to dominate and have control over women and that there are some societies where it is considered normal to beat a woman in public if she dares her husband by questioning his authority.
She pointed out that the purpose of putting in place the committee on Gender Based Violence is to educate, sensitize and enlighten people to “SAY NO TO GENDER BASED VIOLENCE”
