UK Based Nigerian Leverages AI to Spot Bandits, Offers Anti-Terrorism Support

….seeks collaboration with govt

Nigeria may see a turning point in its battle against terrorism as UK-based Nigerian, Yunusa Jibrin, claims to have harnessed Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify bandits and their hideouts in the country.

Jibrin, a Master’s degree graduate in computer science from the University of Sussex, shared with Vanguard on Sunday his groundbreaking approach using AI-driven image synthesis to generate visual representations of bandits in desert landscapes.

He explained that through this method, he was able to create thousands of images depicting bandits, complete with weapons and vehicles, which were then analyzed using a Vision Transformer (VT) model. The results showed promising accuracy in identifying terrorist elements.

“I took an innovative approach by employing AI-driven image synthesis to create visual representations of bandits in desert environments. Using a Vision Transformer model, we achieved significant accuracy in identifying terrorist elements within these images,” Jibrin stated.

Expressing his commitment to supporting the fight against insecurity in Nigeria, the computer expert from Gombe State, who collaborated with researchers from the Federal College of Education (Technical) Potiskum, stressed the importance of technology-driven warfare against terrorism.

He affirmed his readiness to collaborate with the federal government, offering to integrate the developed algorithms into Nigeria’s operational frameworks to combat insecurity effectively.

“Efforts are underway to formalize these findings, with plans to publish and integrate the developed algorithms into the operational frameworks of the Nigerian government,” Jibrin concluded.
