TRANSPORT: Civil Society Organisations condemns restriction of commercial operations in Ekiti

By Precious Oham

The Coalition of Ekiti Civil Society Organisations, COECSO, has condemned the unwarranted restrictions of commercial vehicles and motorcycles in Ekiti State.

Recall that the Drivers Union in the state reportedly suspended its activities on January 17th 2023, which generated reactions in several quarters.

At a Press Conference, in Ado-Ekiti, on Wednesday, the group blamed the union for failing to notify the populace on the planned restriction of movements thereby causing untold hardships to their members and the citizens.

According to Adesunloro Gbenga, representing the Chairman, Prof. Christopher Oluwadare, motorcycles were seized from commercial transporters, schools run disrupted and pupils were emotionally troubled during the exercise.

While calling on the union to promote peace during and after the general elections, they urged Ekiti people to go about their lawful duties without any fear.

“The Coalition hereby note that these restrictions and the attendant harassments are indicators that may trigger violence as the February 2023 general election approaches. We hereby call on all peace loving stakeholders to ensure this act is effectively curtailed, so that a repeat of such does not occur.

“The Coalition uses this medium to remind all drivers, Okada, and Tricycle unions in the state of the peace pact they all signed- up to promote peace and security for all residents of Ekiti state before, during and after the general elections, and also urge them not to take any action or actions that will inadvertently hamper that pledge.

“The Coalition urges all citizens to go about their lawful duties without any fear and should shun any fake news that can crate tension in the public space. Citizens who have not collected their PVC should determine to visit their respective wards or INEC LGA office to collect it and be ready more than ever before to speak their thump through voting.”
