Residents of the Rivers State settlements of Omagwa and Ipo have blocked the entrance to the Port Harcourt International Airport, in protest against the absence of utilities and power.

Due to the protest, flights have been interrupted, leaving passengers stranded. Additionally, traffic jams have developed that extend from Airport Road to neighbouring communities.

The demonstrators, who left as early as 7 a.m. this morning, bemoaned the lack of quality schools in the neighbourhood and the fact that they were not compensated in any way for housing the international airport and everyday noise pollution.

A protester, Oki charged the airport administration with incompetence, stating, “We in Omagwa and Ipo don’t have light for over 10 years.”

“We demand compensation for the daily noise pollution caused by the airport. We’re worn out; that’s the reason we’re here”
