The Lagos State High Court, Ikeja’s Justice Yetunde Rukayat Pinheiro has set March 7 as the date for hearing all outstanding applications in the lawsuit brought by former State House Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa had taken the assembly and the state government to court over what he claimed was an illegal removal. Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, the current Speaker, is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit, which was filed on February 14, 2025.
Members of the assembly who support Meranda, the current speaker, submitted an application to be added as defendants in the lawsuit during today’s proceedings. In an interview with reporters following the proceeding, Meranda criticized her predecessor’s Thursday storming of the Assembly.
Obasa and his security guards reportedly broke into the Speaker’s Office after storming the assembly complex on Thursday. A four-member parliament was also presided over by the Agege Constituency lawmaker, who insisted on remaining the speaker.
Meranda, however, said that Obasa’s act of ruling over three or four members was a theatrical performance and a sign of shame, even though she was still in charge. “We have numbers that form quorum in our job, so I believe that was just a show of shame.” Therefore, you are only performing theater if you are seated with three or four people,” she stated.
