NDPC to Probe Unauthorized Data Access by NIMC

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced its investigation into the unauthorized access to enrollees’ personal data by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, stated this in a statement signed by Mr. Babatunde Bamigboye, NDPC’s Head of Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations on Sunday.

Olatunji emphasized that the investigation is a regulatory measure prompted by public concerns over reports of illegal data access by XpressVerify.com.

He highlighted NDPC’s ongoing engagement with NIMC on data protection, including a recent workshop in February.

Olatunji assured cooperation from NIMC, which has initiated an internal investigation.

“NDPC aims to scrutinize lawful means of verifying enrollees’ identities and audit alleged unauthorized data processing. Anyone found violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, will face legal consequences.” He said

Additionally, Olatunji directed that preliminary investigation findings be made public within seven days.
