NASU, SSANU to Begin Protest

By Hope-Feyisayo Temitope

Administrative work in universities and inter-university Centres will be disrupted on July 18 as the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) will be holding a one-day protest over their four months withheld salaries.

This was declared on Sunday that they were set for a one-day protest on Tuesday on campuses over the withheld salaries. The one-day protest would be a prelude to a nationwide protest planned for July 18.

For some weeks now, ASUU chapters across campuses in the country have been engaging in protests.

The protesting academics, who were joined by students, threatened to embark on another round of industrial action if the government refused to fulfill the promises made to them.

The union also published an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, demanding the full implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Federal Government since 2009.

Already, the Joint Action Committee of both unions have directed their state chapters to meet today in preparation for tomorrow’s protest.

This decision, according to the unions, followed the alleged failure to reach an agreement with the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.
