Minimum Wage: Labour Gives Defaulters March Deadline

There are strict measures in place to guarantee that states and employers implement the national minimum wage and the corresponding adjustment by the end of March, according to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) President Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim made this statement during the organization’s one-day National Leadership Retreat, which was held in Abuja on Wednesday for the union’s National Administrative Committee members. The retreat’s theme was “Leadership Challenges among Activists.”

Ibrahim, who also serves as the NLC’s national internal auditor, stated that the actions were necessary because states and organizations were consistently delaying their attempts to manipulate wage payments. He claims that dishonesty is one of the problems with the minimum wage’s implementation.

“Payments should have started nationwide once the national minimum wage was enacted into law. However, the majority of states and institutions simply set a minimum wage, which is a number that they use to manipulate workers’ intelligence.

“However, I am glad that the NLC is still involved in this issue and that we have been communicating.” But moving forward, I can guarantee you that we are taking extremely strict steps to guarantee that the minimum wage and any further adjustments will be put into effect between now and the end of this first quarter.

“Any state or labour employer that does not enforce the national minimum wage and adjust workers’ salaries appropriately will be held accountable.” “We have all the tools we need to protect our rights against those employers, and there are labour laws in place,” he said.

According to Ibrahim, who spoke on the retreat’s theme, some members undermined strike actions, making them less effective. He stated that although strikes were still a last resort, the union would look into other approaches to negotiations. He emphasized the importance of ongoing training for university employees and increased funding for postsecondary institutions.
