EKITI NURSES CREATES AWARENESS AGAINST CHOLERA OUTBREAK

Speaking with journalists after the sensitization tour, Chairman of the association, Oladimeji Samuel- Adegbuyi said they were necessitated by the need to carry out the exercise to educate the masses on the cholera epidemic which has broke out in neighbouring states.

He noted that Nurses and Midwives are at the receiving end when there is any outbreak adding that it is advisable to prevent than to treat the disease.

He called on residents of Ekiti State to observe clean hygiene in their homes and environment to prevent the state from witnessing the outbreak of cholera.

“We have been doing it on radio stations severally but we need to visit the people where they are and sensitize them, telling them that cholera is real and much available in neighbouring states and it is a deadly disease.

“Though as deadly, it is preventable and treatable. That is why we go about telling our people that the best prevention for it is cleanliness, hygiene of the hand, hygiene of the body, hygiene of food and environmental hygiene.

“When we are cautious of this, we will be able to prevent cholera because it is better and cheaper to prevent than to cure though it is easily cured but when the presentation is delayed, it can be dangerous and bring about sudden death.

“We Nurses and Midwives are at the receiving end when there is outbreak of any disease because when it happens in the community, they bring them to us in the hospital. We have very few hands doing the work in the hospitals and so we cannot afford to have an overwhelming outbreak of any disease.

“We should be aware that cholera is rampant in our neighbouring states and it is very close to us but we can prevent it general cleanliness. Let us take care of ourselves, environment and our children.”
