EDUCATION OFFICERS IN EKITI UNDERGO TRAINING ON NEW CODE OF CONDUCT TO ENHANCE SAFETY OF SCHOOLS

The Ekiti State Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the World Bank and the Adolescents Girl Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), hosted a one-day training for education officers, both teaching and non-teaching staff in Ekiti North Senatorial District of Ekiti State on a newly drafted code of conduct for the education sector.

Over 100 education officers and staff from across the State participated in the one-day training workshop on Tuesday, at the St. Mary’s Girls Grammar School, Ikole Ekiti which was facilitated by Victoria Fehintola Moses Dada Foundation led by Dr. Afolabi Yemisi.

The one-day training workshop which is aimed at enhancing safe spaces for efficiency and service delivery in the education sector of the State was a collaborative effort between the Ekiti State Ministry of Education, the World Bank, and the Adolescents Girl Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project.

The training, themed “Enhancing Safe Space for Efficiency and Service Delivery in the Education Sector,” aimed to equip participants with a thorough understanding of the Code of Conduct and its implications for creating safer and more efficient school environments.

A consultant of AGILE, Dr. Yemisi Afolabi, who led the session emphasized key aspects of the code which includes professionalism, staff and students welfare, safeguarding against abuse and discrimination, accountability/transparency, and equality.

Dr. Afolabi stressed the importance of adhering to professional standards (such as TRCN registration), prioritizing student well-being, fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment, and maintaining ethical conduct in all interactions.

The workshop also included contributions from the Director-General of Education in Ekiti North, Mrs Oguntuase Remi, the AEO, Mrs Falade, the Host Principal, Mrs Esan T.A and Mr Temitope Ayodele who discussed the roles of teachers and guardians in creating a conducive learning environment.

Ayodele urged teachers to minimize distractions in classrooms, adding that the responsibilities of educational administrators is to build safe school environments for pupils.

Also, the Consultant NGO, for the programme, Victoria Fehintola Moses Dada Foundation led by Dr. Afolabi Yemisi affirmed that a safe school environment would enhance teaching and learning and as well reduce out of school children.

Two other persons who delivered paper at the training, Temitope Ayodele and Moyinoluwa Ogundowole urged the participants to take good advantage of the knowledge gained and step it down when necessary.

They both in their separate presentations highlighted the importance of education officers to achieving a safe school environment.

Earlier, the Project Manager of AGILE extended their appreciation to all attendees for their active participation, highlighting that the importance of their commitment is to improving the quality and safety of education system in Ekiti State.
