The Defence Headquarters has dismissed claims made by an online media organization regarding the purported high alert status of the Presidential Guards Brigade amid suspicions of a coup plot.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier Gen Tukur Gusau, on Monday, the Defence Headquarters labeled the allegations as false and malicious.
According to the statement, the online publication alleged that the Guards Brigade had been placed on high alert due to unusual movements around the seat of power, prompting emergency meetings involving President Bola Tinubu and other key officials.
Brigadier Gen Tukur Gusau emphasized that the claims were baseless, clarifying that the Guards Brigade maintains a standard state of readiness in fulfilling its mandate to protect the Presidency and the Federal Capital Territory.
The statement reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to uphold democracy, emphasizing that such allegations only serve to create unnecessary tension in the country.
Additionally, the Defence Headquarters called on relevant security agencies to take appropriate action against the online media organization responsible for the publication, and announced its intention to pursue legal redress regarding the matter.
The Defence Headquarters urged the public to disregard the unfounded assertions and remain assured of the Armed Forces’ dedication to the protection and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.
