African Union, AU has called on fighting groups in conflict zones to respect International Human Right Law (IHRL) which guarantees the safety and security of humanitarian agencies and workers.

This was disclosed at today’s open session on “Humanitarian Action in Africa obtained from the official Twitter handle of African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security, @AU_PAPS.

AU said, “All fighting groups in conflict zones to respect International Human Right Law (IHRL) and all international instruments relating to the protection of civilians, to open humanitarian corridors and to guarantee the safety and security of humanitarian agencies and workers.”

Also, the AU Council appealed for redoubled efforts in mobilising funding for humanitarian aid, through increasing financial contributions for the AU Humanitarian Agency, to enable the Agency to discharge its mandate in the continent.

The Council emphasized the need for burden sharing among African countries and also commended partners supporting humanitarian actions in Africa and charged them to continue to collaborate with AU for timely and effective responses.
