Cassava farmers in Ado, Ekiti State have been trained on modern technologies and smart ways to engage in cassava farming known as “AKilimo” with the aim of ensuring bumper harvest.
The training which took place at the Agricultural Development Programme Centre, Ado Ekiti on Friday was indeed an eye opener for participants who are members of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, ( AFAN) Ado Local Government, Ekiti State.
Speaking at the training, the resource person, Mr. Tosin Adebayo-Tayo explained that the programme was organised to transfer knowledge he gained during AKILIMO training organized by International Institute of Tropical Agriculture IITA for some of them.
Mr. Adebayo-Tayo who is an Agribusiness Coach with Onelife Initiative for Human Development described AKILIMO as a digital service to provide agronomic advice to cassava growers and small holder farmers on best planting practices and weed control, Tailored fertiliser reccomendations, cassava – maize intercropping and scheduled planting and Harvesting.
He explained that the Use of AKILIMO tools will stimulate increased yield and more profits for the farmers.
The facilitator appealed to cassava farmers to be mindful or how and where they sourced for cassava stems for planting as this will affect the overall yield of their farm.
Reacting, the representative of IITA, Dr. Ogunsanmi Thompson appreciated the step taken by Mr. Adebayo-Tayo Tosin for extending the knowledge gained to other cassava farmers in Ekiti State.
Some of the participants including, Mrs Babalola Olanrewaju and Mr Dada Gabriel commended the organizer of the programme and promised to make use of the experience gained to improve their cassava production
