Appointees Should Give Account of Stewardship, Not Just Thank Governor — Famoroti

Following the dissolution of boards, commissions and parastatals and the termination of appointments of political appointees by the Ekiti State Government, a journalist and broadcaster, Bayo Famoroti, has called on affected appointees to complement their appreciation to Governor Biodun Oyebanji with a public account of their stewardship.

Famoroti said there was nothing wrong with the affected Special Assistants, Senior Special Assistants, Technical Assistants and other appointees appreciating the Governor for giving them the privilege to serve the State. He, however, stressed that public service also carries the responsibility of accounting to the people.

According to him, the appointees should make public what they were appointed to do, the programmes and assignments handled, achievements recorded and the impact of their service during their tenure.
He said such accounts would help the people assess the contributions of individual appointees and provide greater transparency about public offices and resources entrusted to them.
Famoroti added that where applicable, the account of stewardship should be made available alongside relevant appropriation and expenditure information, so that citizens can have a clearer picture of what was allocated, what was implemented and the results achieved.
He said: “There is nothing bad in appreciating the Governor for giving them the privilege to serve. I also join them in appreciating the Governor. But appreciation should not be the end of the story. Let them also give the people their account of stewardship and make their achievements known.”

Famoroti urged the affected appointees to see the end of their appointments not only as a transition but also as an opportunity to demonstrate accountability for the responsibilities entrusted to them.
He maintained that public office is a privilege, but accountability to the people is a responsibility.
