Police Say Arrest of ADC Candidate in Ekiti Followed Rape Complaint, Deny Political Motive

The Ekiti State Police Command has denied claims that the arrest and prosecution of African Democratic Congress, ADC, House of Assembly candidate Ayodele Babatola were illegal or politically motivated, saying the action followed a formal rape complaint.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Command said a 30-year-old woman, Bukola Oluwaseun, reported on May 25, 2026, that Babatola forcefully had sex with her at Kiibat Hotel in Ado-Ekiti on the night of May 24. She alleged he assaulted her and inflicted visible injuries after she refused to cooperate.

According to police, the woman said she met Babatola on social media about three months earlier while he was still abroad. After he arrived in Ado-Ekiti, they agreed to meet, but she claimed he took her to the hotel and had non-consensual sex with her before leaving and blocking all contact.

The Command said Babatola was invited, made a statement, and the case was transferred to the State CID for further investigation. During questioning, he said he was provoked when the woman asked for payment before sex and denied penetration, but admitted leaving her in the room and cutting off contact.

Police said a medical examination confirmed penetration. After concluding investigations, Babatola was charged to court and is currently remanded at the Correctional Service Centre in Ado-Ekiti.

The Command urged the public to disregard allegations of illegal arrest and prosecution, stating the case was based on a clear complaint and thorough investigation, not politics. It said it remains committed to fairness, justice, and the rule of law.
