UCL Draw: Real Madrid Battle Atletico, Liverpool Face PSG

Osamagbe Imadiyi

Following their pairing in Friday’s draw, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain will face each other in the round of 16 of this season’s Champions League. Liverpool qualified for this stage directly by finishing first in the competition’s 36-team league phase, while PSG had to win a two-leg play-off match in which they defeated Brest, another French team, 10-0 overall.

The teams last faced off in the Champions League group stage in 2018–19, with PSG winning 2-1 at home after Liverpool’s 3-2 victory in England. The defending champions Real Madrid will face city rivals Atletico Madrid in another thrilling matchup. Los Blancos won the 2014 and 2016 finals.

Bayern Munich will play German rivals Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal will play PSV Eindhoven, and Inter Milan will play Feyenoord, who just eliminated AC Milan from the playoffs.

Barcelona will play Benfica, whom they knocked out 5–4 on the road in Lisbon last month during the league stage. Aston Villa, who has already suffered a league phase loss to the Belgians, will take on Club Brugge. Borussia Dortmund, the eliminated finalists from the previous season, will play Lille, a French team.
