President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued an order to the country’s security forces, encouraging them to step up their efforts to combat illegal mining activities that are harming Nigeria’s economy.

He made the request during a presentation by Course 32 students at the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja on Thursday.

Addressing the attendees, President Tinubu emphasised the military’s important role in combating the threats presented by illegal miners and other exploiters operating throughout the country, referring to the situation as a big challenge that necessitated immediate and decisive action.

“We have challenges of scavengers and exploiters around the country. We must nip that in the bud, and you military officers understand this better than the civil society,” President Tinubu stated.

The President also stated that safeguarding the nation’s resources through military action would help to create a more stable economic climate, which is critical to Nigeria’s growth and development.

“We expect that through your command, we will have more resources that we need to make sure we have a stable economic environment,” he added.

In addition to cracking down on unlawful operations, President Tinubu emphasised the necessity of providing critical amenities, including as medical facilities, in mining towns. He emphasised that the health and safety of Nigerians must be prioritised as part of the larger endeavour to secure the country’s resources.

“We must pay attention to that at the outset by providing medical centres and other facilities that will protect the lives, property, and health of Nigerians,” the President said.
