The Supreme Court of Nigeria has directed all legal practitioners and court officials to stop using the title Barrister as a prefix to their names in all official dealings.
In a memorandum by the Chief Registrar, Kabir Akanbi, Esq., the apex court said the directive was issued on the orders of the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria.
According to the memo addressed to all litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars and lawyers, the use of Barrister before names is inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected within the Supreme Court.
The court directed that with immediate effect, lawyers must discontinue the use of the title Barrister in official correspondence, court records, documents, identity materials and other engagements.
