A cross section of concerned citizens in Ekiti State have expressed divergent views regarding the postponment of the Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.
The decision to postpone the election was sequel to the court pronouncement which gave INEC an approval to re-configure it’s BVAS machine to avoid lapses noticed during the last election.
Though the announcement came as surprise, those interviewed said there was nothing to worry about since it was for the betterment of the electoral process.
First to speak was the former Commissioner for Information in Ekiti State, Mr. Lanre Ogunsuyi who said a credible election is what matters hence waiting for another one week shouldn’t be a problem.
Also, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ekiti State Council, Rotimi Ojomoyela said the postponment was inevitable considering the hitches recorded during the presidential and National Assembly elections.
Similarly, a political scientist with the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Dr. Olusola Muka urged Nigerians to bear with INEC saying even developed world also encounter logistic problems.
However, the spokesman for the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in Ekiti State, Mr Gani Salau said INEC ought to have put it’s house in order before now, saying the postponment amounts to shifting the goal post at the middle of the game.
Meanwhile, all respondents urged INEC to roundoff the configuration as scheduled to avoid tension
