South-West State Legislatures Advocate Full Legislative Autonomy

…Pledges to embark on constituency projects

The South-West Region of Speakers and Principal Officers has advocated for legislative autonomy to enhance democratic governance.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the Retreat for Speakers and Principal Officers in the region held in Ekiti State and signed by its Chairman, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye.

The Lawmakers revealed that they will engage the Nigeria Governor’s Forum aimed at ensuring that legislative autonomy is granted to the legislative arm of government.

The Lawmakers affirmed that the legislature is a fundamental component of democratic government saying that they are committed to strengthening legislative capacity for good governance.

On the ongoing the constitution amendment, the Lawmakers pledged to ensure that the new constitutional provisions promote rapid development and good governance.

They equally resolved to encourage members to actively engage with their constituents towards ensuring that legislative actions reflect the diverse needs of their constituents.

Other major highlights of the communique is their resolve to organize a South-West Legislative Conference where parliamentarians can benefit from expert presentations towards becoming strong advocates of good governance and democratic practices.

The communique reads in parts: “We resolve to implement e-parliament systems and processes in our various legislatures to improve communication regarding legislative activities, fostering transparency and accountability.

“We emphasize the need for ongoing training for legislators and parliamentary staff to enhance our legislative effectiveness.

“We reaffirm our dedication to diligently performing our constitutional roles of lawmaking, oversight, and appropriation, thereby contributing to good governance and democratic consolidation in the South west states of Nigeria.

“This retreat has reinforced our commitment to strengthening the legislative and enhancing good governance in our states. We are determined to translate the insights gained into actionable strategies for the benefit of our constituents.”
