By Akubulu Ngozi

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has ordered President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to account for spending of about N400bn saved from the removal of subsidy on Petroleum or face legal action.

The body through its Official Twitter @SERAPNigeria also implored the President to provide details of plans on how the savings from the removal of subsidy would be utilized, specific projects on which the funds would be spent on and the mechanisms that have been put in place to ensure that the savings are not embezzled, misappropriated or diverted into private pockets.

This is coming after reports of the sum of N400bn saved by the Federal Government within four weeks after the implementation of removal of subsidy on petrol.

The statement reads, ” We’ve urged President Tinubu to widely publish spending details of the N400 billion saved in four weeks from the removal of subsidy on petrol, or face legal action.”

Also, in a statement published by the body in the beginning of the month as signed by the Deputy Director of SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said, “Your government has a legal responsibility to ensure that the savings from the removal of subsidy on petrol are spent solely for the benefit of the 137 million poor Nigerians who are bearing the brunt of the remove.
