Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a significant increase in scholarships and bursaries for students of Lagos State origin in tertiary institutions, sparking jubilation among stakeholders.
During a one-day interactive session between the governor and student union leaders and stakeholders in Lagos State, Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed that his administration would raise scholarships to N225,000 and bursaries to N60,000 for indigene students, up from the existing N200,000 and N50,000 respectively.
Additionally, scholarships would now be extended to less privileged and physically challenged students in public tertiary institutions, irrespective of origin.
In a move to further engage youth in governance, Sanwo-Olu appointed four former student union leaders, Eniola Opeyemi, Kayode Samuel, Giwa Moore, and Adeola Adewunmi, as his Senior Special Assistants.
Speaking during the interactive session at the Adeyemi Bero Hall, Alausa, the governor emphasized his commitment to constructive engagement with students and continued infrastructure development in public institutions.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of the session as a platform for addressing current issues and fostering dialogue between the government and the governed. He stated, “It is an opportunity for students and other stakeholders to vent their feelings, opinions, and suggestions on how to overcome challenges confronting our collective existence as a people.”
Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his support, affirming the ministry’s dedication to sustaining excellence in tertiary education. He lauded the government’s efforts in prioritizing student and staff welfare and maintaining academic stability across state-owned institutions.
Sule remarked, “Our academic calendars have been running smoothly since the beginning of this administration… it is a reflection of leadership quality and administrative excellence at the helm of affairs.”
The announcement of increased scholarships and bursaries, along with the appointment of former union leaders, signifies a milestone in the state’s commitment to youth development and education.
