Persons Living with Albinism in Ekiti Seek Improved Government Support

…canvasses for involvement in politics

The Albino Network Association, TANA, Ekiti State Chapter, has charged the Federal Government to prioritise the welfare of Persons with Albinism (PWA), and Persons with Disabilities (PWD).

This was stated on Monday during the South West Nigeria International Albinism Awareness Day programme in Ado Ekiti.

The TANA Chairman, South-West Chapter, Comrade Abiodun Abegunde, equally canvassed for the support of PWA in politics and boasted of good governance if positioned to be at the helm of affairs in the state.

He said: “I am calling the present government of Nigeria and the incoming President to look into the issues of health of persons with Albinism because I can discover that 60 percent of persons with Albinism in Nigeria are battling with skin cancer across the country.

“Let’s go by the provisions of the electoral Acts involving PWD and PWA, the law has been passed that all the provisions has to be provided for PWD to assess political inclusion. When we have PWDs in position, it is what can promote good governance. I will call on the INEC to ensure that there is free and fair elections for us to have a better society.” He said.

Also, the Chairman of Albino Network in Oyo State, Bolaji Afolabi charged PWAs and PWDs to be self independent rather than relying on the government.

He equally urged them to be confident in choosing their partner, who should be a non-albino individual to curtail the spread of albinism in the country.

“We shouldn’t rely on waiting for government, at least, have something at hand doing, like learning a trade.

“As we have heard now, it’s not advisable for albino to marry another albino because of the gene. For me, I married a black Ekiti woman and our children are not albino.” He stated.

However, the Ondo State Albino Association Chairman, Fagoroye Ayodele, also advised them to be self protective by using fez caps, not working under the Sun, to avoid skin cancer.
