Olukere Condemns Owo Killings

Says Gruesome Murder Must Not Be Swept Under Carpet

The Olukere of Odo-Oja, Ikere- Ekiti, Oba Ganiyu Obasoyin has condemned Sunday’s attack on  worshippers at Owo in Ondo State.

To this end, the monarch called on the Inspector General of Police and other relevant security agencies in the country to work fast and bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice.

Olukere in a statement issued and personally signed by him explained that he was deeply saddened, worried, displeased, and pained at the collapse of the security architecture of the government and the failure of those in charge to rise up to the security challenges.

According to him, “if the house of God is unsafe, then no where is safe in the country”.

He called for more proactive measures to tackle the incessant killings of innocent Nigeria citizens, while asking President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of police to ensure the matter is not swept under the carpet.

The traditional ruler also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct relevant security agencies in the country to do everything possible and arrest those behind the “regrettable” attacks on the innocent and unarmed Christians at the Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owo. Noting that security agencies owed Nigerian a duty to ensure the ugly trend is nipped in the bud.

“The task before the country’s security architecture now is to work fast, unveil those behind the assassination bid with the aim of bringing them to book”.

The monarch called on Yoruba Obas, Leaders and opinion moulders to be proactive, work assiduously and invoke the spirit of the ancestors on the impending danger that may befall the Yoruba nation, stressing that a conference of Yoruba leaders both home and in the Diaspora should be called to find a lasting solution as well as to ensure Yoruba nation safeguard it’s territory.

He also condoled with the state Governor,Rotimi Akeredolu over the reported killings, injury of several innocent and unarmed Christian who were worshipping at the church on Sunday. 

“This is one attack too many, and everything must be done to provide security for the people in our rural communities,” he said.

“My condolences to the Government and people of Ondo state, and the families of the victims,” he said.

He further commiserated with families of the victims and wished the injured speedy healing.

The traditional ruler further expressed concern over the escalating insecurity in the country as the 2023 general elections draw near.

He said the country has been beset by insecurity with the Boko Haram insurgents, bandits killing and abducting citizens in the Northern part of the country, which he said is gradually dovetailing to the Western part of the nation, while asking other traditional rulers and relevant security agencies to beef up security around their domains in order to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
