Niger State Workers Embark on Extensive Strike

In response to a mandate from the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, workers in Niger State have ceased work this morning pending the fulfilment of their requests by the state administration.

The State Chairman of the NLC, Idrees Lafene, and the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Ibrahim Gana, gave the order for the state’s civil servants to go on an indefinite strike on Monday. Their reason was that they believed the state government had abandoned talks on matters that would have affected both the workers’ welfare and the smooth operation of the state.

In an attempt to stop the walkout, the State Government Secretary Abubakar Usman told reporters that a labour dispute meeting was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

He pointed out that the Mohammed Bago administration was enjoying friendly relations with organized labor, guaranteeing that any controversial matters would be resolved in the public good.

“To further this understanding, the Niger State government is hoping to receive organized labor’s cooperation in this regard and has invited them to a meeting by 2 pm today, Tuesday, February 20, 2024,

“To further this understanding, the Niger State government is hoping to receive organized labor’s cooperation in this regard and has invited them to a meeting by 2 pm today, Tuesday, February 20, 2024,” he stated.

He gave the public the assurance that the Bago administration is pro-people, pro-labor, and open to discussions and agreements that will advance Niger State.

While everything was going on, multiple attempts were made to get in touch with Tanko Lawal, the SSG’s information officer, who signed the statement regarding the planned meeting between organized labor and the state government on Tuesday, but his phone line would not connect.
