The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has charged judges with the mandate to defend and promote the rule of law.
The statement was made at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja recently, during the orientation programme for recently appointed judges of the higher courts of record
Speaking through Justice Jummai Hannatu Sankey, Ariwoola gave the newly appointed justices advice that stressed humility in acknowledging their limitations as well as seeking help and direction from other judges while also seeking education.
“You will often encounter complicated cases that also present ethical quandaries. Occasionally, you will be faced with cases that necessitate making tough choices. However, never forget that justice is a journey that should not be completed with fanfare, parades, or awards. Instead, it is an ongoing endeavour, and you must not be afraid to persist on the side of justice and integrity.”
According to the CJN, judges play a crucial function that necessitates an appreciation of their dual roles as guardians of the law and priests in the temple of justice.
The NJI Administrator, Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, also advised the new judges to remain consistent and stick to their course of action in his welcoming remarks.
In order to be dedicated to combating injustice, defending the rule of law, advancing equality before the law, and advancing the human rights of the people of our beloved country Nigeria, you have become people who have subjugated or given up your personal ambitions and objectives, he remarked.
