..as EKSU College of Medicine marks week in grand style
The Director General, Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control, NSCDC, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa has called on tertiary institutions across the country to defy all odds and strive towards conducting more researches that could provide solutions to the various challenges facing the country.
Dr. Adetifa spoke while delivering a lecture organized by the Ekiti State University, College of Medicine to mark her 2nd Annual Week and Scientific Conference held at the institution’s premises with the theme:”Conducting Medical Research in Resource-Limited Settings: Challenges and opportunities.
According to the NCDC boss, the Nigerian tertiary institutions are currently engulfed with numerous challenges capable of affecting research work but such should not discourage researchers from doing the needful due to the opportunities and benefits attached.
He identified some of the challenges affecting tertiary institutions to include, improper funding, inadequate training, power and access to good internet.
Dr Adetifa explained that, if all these challenges were adequately addressed, it would be easier for researchers to bring more new things into limelight and assist goverments to address her challenges.
The NCDC boss urged researchers to make use of available opportunities provided by the domestic and international organizations to improve on their research works, saying every challenge represents an opportunity.
According to him, postgraduate diploma, online courses, learning exchange opportunities should be utilized by researchers to provide data to inform, response, patient management and reduction of diseases outbreak
In his speech, Provost College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, Professor Olusegun Bamidele explained that the purpose of the programme was to create an avenue for interaction between students, academia within and outside the University.
Professor Bamidele appreciated the past and current Vice Chancellors of the University for the efforts to ensure that EKSU College of Medicine ranks among the best in the world.
The Don therefore appealed to the state government to provide better budget for the University’s College of Medicine to be able to meet its needs, saying the Internally Generated Revenue of the institution could not cater for all the demands of the college.
The Vice Chancellor, professor Edward Olanipekun represented by Professor Babatola Ayodele said more attention would be paid on the institution college of medicine to produce competent and qualified medical students that would compete with their counterparts worldwide.
Professor Olanipekun congratulated the college on the successful hosting of second annual week and achievements so far since its establishment.
On his own, the chairman, planning committee, Professor Joseph Fadare appreciated those that made the programme a successful one, saying the topic treated by Dr Adetifa would be useful to students and lecturers of the college.
