Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has expressed concerns that the N23.1 billion allocated for the rehabilitation and repair of airport facilities nationwide is grossly insufficient.
Speaking on Channels TV’s “The Morning Brief” on Tuesday, Kuku highlighted the extensive infrastructure challenges facing the country’s airports.
Kuku explained that the allocated funds are inadequate given the scale of necessary infrastructure development and upgrades. FAAN oversees 22 airports, with an additional six to seven state or privately-owned airports also receiving support for aviation security and fire and rescue services.
She noted, “only three of the 22 airports are actually profitable and contribute largely to the sustenance of the airport companies that we run”
Kuku also stated that new airports are being developed in both northern and southwestern states, which will also require financial support.
Kuku emphasized the need for a broader network of airports to optimize resources and improve the overall efficiency and sustainability of Nigeria’s airport infrastructure.
