Land Dispute Turns Fatal: Ekiti Police Arrest Ex-RTEAN Chairman ‘Metilo’ Over Alleged Abduction, Murder of 45-Year-Old Man

Ekiti State Police Command has arrested the former Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Ekiti State Chapter, Rotimi Joseph Olabiowonu, alias “METILO”, over the alleged assault, abduction and death of one Ogunsakin Sunday, 45, of Afao-Ekiti.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a discreet and thorough investigation into the incident.

According to the Command, the incident occurred on September 14, 2026, at about 8:45 pm, when Metilo and about five accomplices allegedly stormed the residence of the deceased in a Toyota bus over a land dispute, dragged him out, assaulted him and whisked him away to an unknown destination.

It was further alleged that while the vehicle was in motion, the suspects pushed the victim out, causing him to sustain severe head injuries. Upon noticing the gravity of his injuries, the suspects reportedly rushed him to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

Following the report, operatives of the Command immediately visited the scene and commenced investigation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, in a statement on Monday, confirmed that Metilo and one of his alleged gang members, Adedoyin Opeyemi, have been arrested and are currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.

The Commissioner of Police has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case for a comprehensive investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that all culpable persons are brought to justice.

CP Michael called for calm and urged members of the public to refrain from taking laws into their own hands, advising that land and other civil disputes should be resolved through lawful and peaceful means.

He assured that the investigation will be conducted professionally and impartially.
