JDPI Ekiti Partners PWD to Demand Inclusion in Governance

The Justice Development and Peace Initiative (JDPI), Catholic Diocese of Ekiti, and People With Disabilities (PWD) have joined forces to advocate for greater inclusion of PWDs in Ekiti State governance.

This initiative is part of an ongoing series of activities sponsored by the European Union through JDPI, aimed at promoting inclusivity and equal rights for all.

The call for inclusion was made during a quarterly dialogue meeting organized by JDPI on Thursday at the Catholic Bishops’ Quarters in Ado-Ekiti. The event brought together stakeholders from PWD communities and media representatives to discuss challenges and opportunities for PWD participation in governance.

Rev. Father Emmanuel Akingbade, Director of JDPI, emphasized the organization’s commitment to partnering with PWDs to advocate for their welfare and rights. “We want to aid in the welfare of PWDs, especially regarding their right to be equal citizens,” he stated. “JDPI is reforming its policies to accommodate PWDs, recognizing that disability does not diminish one’s humanity.”

Barr. Anthony Kay Adeusi, JDPI’s Legal Officer, reiterated the organization’s focus on outreach and partnership with PWDs. He affirmed that the dialogue is part of a broader initiative to reach out and collaborate with PWD communities, with the media playing a crucial role in amplifying their voices and advocacy efforts.

Mr. Owolabi Kayode, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) in Ekiti State, expressed gratitude for JDPI’s support. He emphasized the need for targeted advocacy visits to government agencies, particularly the Ministries of Education and Health, to advocate for PWD inclusion in employment opportunities. He also called for outreach to the First Lady’s office to address the specific needs of women with disabilities.

“We appreciate JDPI’s initiative,” said Owolabi, “Having their support in tackling the challenges faced by our members is a welcome development.”

Media representatives at the meeting pledged their commitment to utilizing their platforms to champion the rights of PWDs and amplify their voices to the relevant authorities.

This initiative signifies a positive step towards a more inclusive and equitable Ekiti State, where PWDs can fully participate in governance and enjoy their equal rights as citizens. With the combined efforts of JDPI, PWD communities, and the media, the goal of achieving greater inclusion for PWDs in Ekiti State governance appears increasingly attainable.
