….organises debate, quiz, essay for secondary schools students
As part of measures to instill the message of GBV and respect for Human Rights in the minds of young generations, the Justice Development and Peace Initiative, JDPI organized
a debate, quiz and Essay written competition among some secondary school students in Ekiti.
The exercise is organized to commemorate this year’s International Day of Human Rights.
The students were asked to speak on various GBV related topics so as to fermiliarized them with what GBV is all about and the way forward.
In the first debate, Oganganmodu High school, Ido Ekiti emerged overall best winner while Muslim College, Oke Ila Ado Ekiti bagged the second position.
In second debate, Petoa City college emerged winner, St Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School, Ikole Ekiti took second position while Mary Hill Secondary school, Ado Ekiti went home with third position.
In Essay writting, African Chuch Comprehensive, High School Ikere Ekiti emerged winner, St Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School,Ikole Ekiti bagged the second position while St Louis Grammar School,Ikere Ekiti came third.
In the quiz category, African Chuch Comprehensive School, Ikere Ekiti emerged winner as Ekiti State Government College, Ado Ekiti came second while third position went to Oganganmodu Grammar school, Ido Ekiti
Students of St Joseph Catholic College Ajilosun also had a round table discussion on GBV and it’s implications, which also confirmed the fact that young generations are beginning to have more knowledge about GBV.
Speaking during the programme held in Ado Ekiti, the Assistant Director, Ekiti, JDPI, Sister Agatha Ogbuagu urged Nigerians, especially children to always speak out, whenever their rights are being violated by reporting to appropriate quarters.
She urged students to approach JDPI to seek justice whenever their rights is trampled on or felt cheated to seek justice, saying such services would be render at no cost.
According to her, promotion of human rights will give room for sane and safe society as well as reduce decadence among younger generation.
In a separate interviews, some of the students of the schools that participated in the programme commended Ekiti JDPI for organising the event saying it had exposed them to some of the steps needed to be taken to protect their rights.
Thirteen secondary schools including St Louis Grammar School, Ikere Ekiti, Government College, Ado Ekiti, African Chuch comprehensive High school, Ikere Ekiti, St Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School Ikole Ekiti, Fountain International High School, Ado Ekiti, Are- Igbemo High School, Igbemo Ekiti, Muslim College Ado Ekiti, Petoa Group of School, Ado Ekiti , Mary-Hill secondary school, Ado Ekiti, Oganganmodu High School, Ido Ekiti participated in the quiz, Essay and the debate competitions.
At the programme a drama Titled “voice of the voiceles”was presented by St Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School, Ikole Ekiti to enlighten members of the public on the need to accord female children same opportunity like their male counterparts.
