The Assistant General Secretary of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Chris Onyeka has expressed grave concerns about state governors’ compliance with the regulations, pointing out a concerning pattern of disobedience.

He stated, “If you examine the history of some of these governors and their handlers, you will find a preponderance of those who came to power by breaking the laws,”

Onyeka stated this in an interview on minimum wage law and its execution at Abuja.

Onyeka also emphasized that governors who do not respect the sanctity of laws are more likely to flout them, raising questions about the commitment of some state leaders to legal and ethical standards.

It was gathered that despite the N30,000 minimum wage law enacted in 2019, 15 states have yet to implement it. This delay has caused significant anxiety among workers, who are eager for the financial relief a new wage law would provide.

According to Onyeka, there is a well-known lack of fiscal discipline in several states, and some governors have appropriated public funds for their own personal gain out of personal avarice.
