Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), sources familiar with the matter have revealed.
The governor has concluded consultations with key political allies and is expected to formally announce his decision in January 2026.
Efforts to secure the endorsement of Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former Kano governor, reportedly failed. Kwankwaso has publicly rejected the plan and affirmed he will remain in the NNPP.
Despite Kwankwaso’s refusal, sources say that anticipated support from several members of the Kano State House of Assembly and influential party leaders could help Governor Yusuf stabilize the political transition.

A lawmaker, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the governor has already briefed some legislators on his plans.
Earlier speculation suggested both Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf were planning a joint move to the APC, but Kwankwaso dismissed those claims and has continued to criticize the ruling party.
Political analysts say that if Governor Yusuf’s defection is confirmed, it would trigger a major realignment in Kano politics and could influence party dynamics across the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
