The Women’s Wing of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ekiti State Chapter, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth as it commemorated International Women’s Day with a symposium and leadership roundtable themed “Give to Gain: Navigating the Path to Sustainable Development in Ekiti.”
Speaking at the event on behalf of Gov. Biodun Oyebanji, the Head of Service, Dr.(Mrs.) Olufolake Olomojobi described the programme as a platform for reflection, appreciation, and renewed commitment among women in the labour movement.
She explained that the theme highlights the need to recognise both contributions made and benefits received, while encouraging continuous impact.
“The theme for this year is ‘Give to Gain.’ We acknowledge what we have been given and the gains we have received, and we are recommitting ourselves to ensuring that what has been given continues to yield results,” she said.
According to her, the present administration has created an enabling environment for women to thrive through inclusive policies and opportunities.
“The government has given women a framework to thrive, the opportunity to learn and relearn, and the platform to occupy key positions. You can see how women have mobilised themselves and are discovering their strengths,” she added.
Also speaking, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Labour Matters, Mr. Kayode Fatomiluyi described the programme as highly significant to the administration’s agenda.
He noted that the annual celebration recognises the critical role of women in societal development and aligns with the government’s commitment to inclusiveness.
“This is an international event that signifies the importance of women in society. It is a day the whole world recognises their role, particularly in development, and that is exactly what is happening here today,” he said.
Fatomiluyi stressed that the Ekiti State Government has demonstrated strong support for women, describing the administration as women-friendly.
“Our governor has shown commitment to women’s inclusion. Ekiti has one of the highest numbers of women in government positions, and that tells you the kind of leadership we have,” he added.
He, however, urged women in the state to continue supporting government initiatives, stressing that increased support would translate into greater developmental gains.
“To whom much is given, much is expected. The government has extended its olive branch, and we expect women to reciprocate. I believe this will also reflect in future electoral participation, where women will come out en masse,” he said.
Delivering the keynote lecture, a Professor of Religious Studies at the Ekiti State University, Prof. Ibiyinka Adesanya charged members of the NLC women’s wing to take the lead in driving sustainable development through knowledge-sharing, mentorship, and active participation in governance.
She noted that women have consistently contributed to societal development, often without formal recognition.
“Women have given their strength in labour, their minds in education, and their hearts in service. They have led in spaces where they were not formally invited and have consistently gone beyond expectations,” she said.
Adesanya also highlighted the need to address gender-based barriers, particularly societal biases against the girl child.
“There are still mindsets that nothing good can come out of a girl child. We must change that narrative and continue to promote girls’ education,” she stressed.
She urged participants to prioritise mentoring younger generations and converting knowledge into leadership for the benefit of society.
“We must give our knowledge, mentor others, and ensure that what we have learned is passed on. That is how we build a stronger society,” she added.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of the NLC Women’s Wing in Ekiti State, Comrade Pastor(Mrs.) Tayo Bade-Gboyega, advised members to embrace unity, cooperation, and mutual support in their workplaces.
“My advice is that we should support one another. If we support each other, there will be peace in our workplaces and in the state,” she said.
She noted that collaboration among workers would enhance productivity and promote harmony across government offices and institutions.
“Where there is love, there will be peace, and many good things will follow,” she added.
Dignitaries at the event included the Ekiti State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Olapeju Babafemi; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani; Chairman of NLC, Ekiti Chapter, Com. Olatunde Kolapo and the Chairman of NULGE, Ekiti Chapter, Com. Oluseyi Olatunde among other stakeholders.
