Renowned Civil Engineer and the deputy National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE), Engr Bola Mudasiru has urged engineering professionals to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) or risk being left behind in the evolving global workforce.
He made this call on Thursday while delivering a lecture titled “Sustainable Engineering in the AI Era: Challenges, Opportunities and Strategies for a Resilient Future”, at the 2025 Engineering Week of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ado-Ekiti Branch.
Dr. Musibaru described AI as a tool that will empower its users and create new opportunities but not serve as a threat to jobs.
He noted that more jobs opportunities will emerge for those who adapt and acquire the right competencies even though some jobs may be displaced by AI-driven innovations.
In her remarks, a former Commissioner of Women Affairs in Ekiti State, Peju Adebimpe, highlighted the need for more women to join the engineering profession, describing AI as a blessing rather than a threat for the upcoming generation.
The Branch Chairman, Engr. Omotola Alawode emphasized the importance of continuous professional development, stressing that engineering remains central to harnessing technological innovations for societal progress.
She described engineering as a profession that harnesses technological innovations and research developments to create models and tools that make life easier for humanity, explaining that the public lecture is in line with that mission and serves as a means to enrich the knowledge base of members.
Another highlight of the public lecture was the presentation of awards to notable individuals like the Branch Chairman in recognition of her dedication and meritorious service to the branch, the Guest Speaker, among others.
