EKSU INAUGRAL LECTURE: DON RECOMMENDS USE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS

…as Vice Chancellor announces promotion of over 50 scholars to professor

A Professor of Medicinal Biochemistry, Professor Olatunde Oseni has recommended the use of medicinal plants in the prevention and treatment of any known ailment.
Professor Oseni gave the recommendation while delivering the 84th inaugural lecture of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti.

Professor Oseni described medicinal plants as the greatest gifts from God to man and the beginning of prevention of human sickness, protection of human health, hence, the survival and sustenance of the human race.

The inaugural lecturer maintained that to ensure the use of medicinal plants, the Ministry of Health and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) should regulate and control the preparation of drugs and other remedies from medicinal plants used in the country.

Professor Oseni also disclosed that the global market value of medicinal plant products exceeded $100 billion per annum, hence, advised the Federal Government to embark and key – in to international medicinal plants market with a view to increasing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The don, however, warned against excessive consumption of these medicinal plants and plant products as excessive consumption “may aggravate complications in the body”.

While giving his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Edward Olanipekun encouraged Professors in the university to brace up and showcase their academic achievements. According to him, “academics should go beyond publishing for the purpose of promotion. Their researches should be able to proffer solutions to societal challenges”.

Professor Olanipekun who announced with delight that he had promoted about 150 scholars in the university to the rank of Professor, also charged the university’s Office of Research, Development and Innovation to commence the collation of inaugural lectures already presented in the university that could address societal challenges.
