Old Students of the Ekiti State Government College Ado-Ekiti have been described as selfless builders of human and partners in progress.
The Special Adviser, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Adebimpe Aderiye mni stated this at the ‘Prize-Giving and Awards’ at the Ekiti State Government College, Ado-Ekiti.
While commending the strides and contributions of the Alumni Association to the school over the years, the Special Adviser who was represented by the Executive Secretary of the State’s Scholarship Board, Mrs. Bosede Jegede said their contribution to the development is appreciated by the government.
She explained that the task of funding education shouldn’t be left to the government alone, therefore the old student’s consistent intervention is a partnership that will impact the lives of the students greatly.
While thanking the Biodun Oyebanji-led administration for its efforts, specifically, Government intervention through the AGILE project, the Alumni President, Mr. Kayode Fashubaa stressed the need for more commitment on the part of the government, especially on the nagging challenge of encroachment which keeps exposing the young students and staff to danger.
In his words; “The Alumni Association since her inception in 2012 has put Tens of millions worth of intervention in the school. We attempted the perimeter fencing of the school on more than two occasions but some criminal elements came to bring down the structures. It is a multi-million naira project and we are committed to seeing it become a reality if the government can wade off trespassers.”
Mr. Fashubaa disclosed that the association’s sponsorship of the prize-giving where cash gifts of over 1.7 million naira and a Laptop computer were shared was another way to encourage students and staff of the school on the need to be dedicated to their studies and work.
On this part, the Principal of the school, Mr. Olanipekun Eweje showered encomiums on the Old Students, saying, his decision to give awards of recognition to the association and some Sets was a result of the marvelous work being carried out by them.
He added that their contribution was unprecedented and he has decided to open a register where past and future interventions are being recorded for posterity’s sake. He commended the Alumni Association for always standing in the gap and also being good role models to the students.
A total of 65 students and 2 teachers got various awards with Adebayo Favour Ayomide, male of SS 2 emerging with the highest 13 awards and a Laptop computer, followed by Oseni Shakiroh, female, with 7 awards, and Olugbadebo Funbi, a JSS 1 student who won a scholarship for the rest of her secondary education in the school.
The most outstanding teacher award went to Mr. Abiodun Akanle who incidentally is an Alumnus and Mr. Victor Alawada got the award of the Best teacher.
Other dignitaries present at the event include; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi who was represented by the Dep. Director, Department of Schools, the Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission, Mr. Michael Omolayo, and the Chairman, Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Chief Oladunjoye Bejide.
